Star Anise is the star shaped fruit of an evergreen plant known scientifically as illicium verum. Originating in Southern China, star anise as a licorise- or anise-like flavor. Traditionally used as a spice star anise appears to have significant health benefits. According to South Korean researchers the extracts and essential oil of star anise demonstrated antifungal properties when tested against Candida albicans, a harmful fungus which is very difficult to get rid of. Tests of antimicrobial compounds from star anise found that they were effective against numerous drug resistant bacteria. Star anise also exhibits strong anti-oxidant activity, which can neutralize damaging free radicals in our bodies. Star anise has shown to help relieve intestinal problems such as abdominal cramps, bloating, gas, constipation and improves digestion. It has a sedative property as well, which may be helpful for inducing sleep.


Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) has a flavor similar to star anise. It is one of the most popular flavorings in Mediterrarian cuisine. Fennel is native to Southern Europe and grows in Europe, Middle East, China and India. The health benefits of fennel includes: strong anti-oxidant properties, aids in digestion, flatulence (gas), relieves cough and bronchitis. Although star anise and fennel are totally different species their flavor and health properties are similar, supporting each others.
